WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on the passing of Jacqueline Ellis:
"I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jacqueline Ellis yesterday. She served Rep. Al Green and the people of Texas's Ninth District faithfully for many years, and I was proud to call her a constituent. As a Chief of Staff who had earlier served as the top aide to Sen. Howell Heflin and Rep. Major Owens, Jacqui spent nearly thirty years helping to write and improve legislation on nearly every issue affecting businesses and families across America.
"Jacqui was a mentor to countless younger staffers, particularly women of color, and she founded the Organization of African American Administrative Assistants that served chiefs of staff in the House. I was honored to participate in an event she moderated with the Prince George's County Chapter of the Links, Inc., in Maryland's Fifth District just two months ago on the epidemic of gun violence in our country. Jacqui will be dearly missed here on Capitol Hill, and I offer my condolences to her family and to all those who have served with her over the years."
