WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) released the following statement today on the passing of Sandy Berger, who served as National Security Advisor under President Clinton:

“I was deeply saddened to learn of Sandy Berger’s passing this morning.  As National Security Advisor under President Clinton, Sandy helped lead the United States in shaping a post-Cold War strategy.  In the Balkans, the Middle East, and the Pacific, he led historic efforts at engagement and peacemaking, and Sandy was among the first policymakers to herald the connection between climate change and global security.  Working closely with former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and other former Clinton Administration officials, Sandy remained engaged in American foreign policymaking as an advisor and consultant in recent years, and I know he will be greatly missed by many in Congress, the State Department, and throughout the country he served so ably.  I join in offering my condolences to his wife Sarah, their three children, and the extended Berger family.”
