WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement this morning on the passing of former First Lady Barbara Bush:
“Barbara Bush was an extraordinary woman of strong and decent values and sharp wit. Her popularity stemmed in large part because she refused pretense and lived life on her own terms. When she encountered injustice, she called it out. When she came upon a cause she believed in, she made it her passion. When devastating hurricanes struck Texas, she worked to help families cope. Because of Mrs. Bush’s efforts, millions of American children and their parents have accessed literacy education.
“As the wife and mother to presidents, as an indefatigable woman, as an author, and as a patriot, Mrs. Bush continued to inspire Americans on both sides of the aisle long after her role as First Lady came to an end. I was honored to have met her on a number of occasions, and I will cherish the memories I have of those times. I join in expressing my condolences to President George H. W. Bush, to President George W. Bush and Laura Bush, and to the entire extended Bush family.”
