WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on the passing of former Congressman Steve LaTourette:

“I was deeply saddened to learn this morning of the passing of former Rep. Steve LaTourette.  We served together in the Congress for eighteen years, and during that time we became friends, in spite of disagreements we had on matters of policy.  It was easy to be Steve’s friend – he brought to the Congress a genuine desire to forge consensus, reach across barriers, and treat all he met with kindness.  Throughout Steve’s life and career, he regularly put country above party.  His influence over the development of our nation’s transportation networks cannot be overstated, and as an appropriator Steve sought to prioritize growth for main street and the middle class.  He served his constituents in northeastern Ohio well, and I was proud to work alongside him to find common ground on addressing our nation’s challenges.  My thoughts today are with his wife, Jennifer, his daughter Sarah, and the entire LaTourette family.”
