WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the passing of former Congressman Ron Dellums:

“Ron Dellums saw injustice, inequality, and poverty and fought tirelessly against them. As a city councilman, as a Member of Congress, as a mayor, and as a citizen, he stood by his principles and never wavered in his effort to promote equal opportunity for all, equal justice for all. I was honored to serve alongside him in Congress for many years and call him a friend.

“A former Marine, Ron chaired the House Armed Services Committee at a critical moment when our military was in transition to meet the challenges of a post-Cold War world. He proved an outstanding leader for the Committee as it worked to maintain our military as a force for peace. In addition, he played an important role in ending the apartheid in South Africa, overriding a Presidential veto to impose economic sanctions on the government.

“I will miss Ron and am deeply saddened by his passing. His loss will be felt not only among those he represented in Congress but by those with whom he served, particularly in the Congressional Black Caucus he helped found. My thoughts are with his wife Cynthia and his entire family as well as with his successor in Congress, Rep. Barbara Lee, and the people of Oakland for whom he worked so hard throughout his life.”
