WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the passing of former Congressman Martin Olav Sabo:
"I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my friend, former Rep. Martin Olav Sabo. Martin loved Minnesota, his nation, and the House dearly and served all three with great distinction. He was always proud of his Norwegian heritage, and he made a point of striving for civility in every debate. Martin worked hard to create jobs and opportunities for the people of Minnesota's Fifth District and promoted policies that have made the Twin Cities a great place to live, launch a business, and raise a family. As Chairman of the Budget Committee in the early 1990's, Martin was instrumental in laying the groundwork for the budget surpluses at the turn of the century.
"I first met Martin when I was serving as President of the Maryland State Senate and he was Speaker of the Minnesota House. We struck up a friendship that continued for many years during our time as colleagues in the U.S. House and after his retirement. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife Sylvia and the entire Sabo family."
