WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement this evening on the passage of H. Res. 128, supporting respect for human rights and encouraging inclusive governance in Ethiopia:

“I was proud to support passage of this important resolution, which supports justice and human rights in Ethiopia.  I hope we will see democratic changes in Ethiopia, which remains a key U.S. ally in the war on terror but has suffered unlawful arrests of dissidents and journalists, killing of nonviolent protesters, and a general political crackdown.  This resolution will help push for necessary changes in Ethiopia and hopefully speed up democratic progress, and I thank Reps. Karen Bass and Chris Smith for leading this bipartisan resolution.”
