WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after President Obama announced his plan for the U.S. automotive industry:

“The plan announced by President Obama today is an honest and responsible effort to provide for a strong auto industry while also protecting taxpayers’ money.  The President is right to ask for shared sacrifices from all parties to ensure that GM and Chrysler return to being viable companies that produce the fuel-efficient cars of the future.

“I believe, like the President, that these auto companies can emerge from this period as stronger competitors, better equipped to succeed in today’s economy and in the global marketplace.  A robust auto industry is critical to our nation’s manufacturing capability and our national security, and Congress remains committed to working with the President to revitalize this industry.”
