WASHINGTON, DC – Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released their jobs report for November:
“Last month, I traveled to Nevada, Missouri, and Illinois to launch the Make It In America listening tour to hear directly from those on the front lines of our economic challenges. In all three states, I heard the same message: Congress has an important role to play in encouraging entrepreneurship, helping workers get the skills necessary to succeed, and invest in infrastructure to facilitate economic growth. It was also painfully obvious at each stop that Congress is failing to fulfill that role. Instead, Republicans have wasted a year pushing the country in the opposite direction. If there were any question about their priorities, the answer can be found in their tax plan. They would give more than 60% of the benefits to the top one percent while increasing taxes on 78 million middle-class households, leaving 13 million without health insurance coverage, cutting Medicare by $25 billion next month, and adding $1.7 billion to the debt. That’s no way to help those who are struggling to get by and get ahead.
“As House Democrats continue our listening tour across the country in the months ahead, we will be collecting input and ideas to strengthen our Make It In America plan for jobs and opportunity so we can offer better ways for Congress to meet the economic challenges facing our nation.”
