WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the North and South Korean governments announcing their intention to end the Korean War:

“While I welcome these developments that hold the potential to bring an end to more than six decades of conflict on the Korean peninsula, I urge caution as we continue to gauge whether the Kim regime is serious about rapprochement.  The North Koreans have lied in the past and broken agreements.  As talks continue, the United States must play a constructive role and keep putting pressure on North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons program and pursue a future for the peninsula free from nuclear arms.   We must also reassure Japan and other allies that their security is paramount in any negotiation.

“Thousands of American service-members gave their lives during the Korean War, and many thousands more have stood sentry over the decades in the Republic of Korea, at the ready to defend our ally.  Any process to bring an end to the conflict ought to be undertaken in a way that secures a real peace and gives all the people of the Korean peninsula a better future.”
