WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on President Obama's nomination of General Joseph Dunford to serve as the next Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff:
“I join in congratulating General Joseph Dunford on his nomination to be our nation’s next Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Even before his appointment as 36th Commandant of the Marine Corps last year, General Dunford stood out as a distinguished leader of our men and women in uniform, having served at the helm of ISAF in Afghanistan and in command of the I Marine Expeditionary Force. ‘Fighting Joe,’ as his Marines have called him, brings a wealth of combat, administrative, and planning experience to this new assignment, where he will serve as the highest ranking officer in our military and oversee military operations to protect against threats from ISIL, al-Qaeda, and all those seeking to harm our country and our allies. I hope the Senate will move quickly to confirm him to this post, and I join in thanking General Martin Dempsey for his outstanding service these past four years as Chairman.”
