WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee Ranking Member Patty Murray (D-WA) and Chairman Lamar Alexander (R-TN) announced they have reached an agreement on bipartisan legislation to strengthen the Affordable Care Act:

“I welcome reports that Senators Murray and Alexander have reached agreement on legislation to ensure the continued payment of cost-sharing reductions for two years, invest in outreach and enrollment, and put in place other market stabilization measures. While Democrats would prefer to permanently authorize CSR payments in order to provide certainty to consumers and insurers, this deal represents a reasonable compromise.

“I am hopeful that Members on both sides of the aisle will carefully consider this agreement and that Republicans will end their efforts to sabotage the Affordable Care Act. The current instability that has been created by President Trump and Congressional Republicans’ sabotage efforts is not sustainable. Failure to take action will result in higher premiums and insurers existing the marketplace.

“I look forward to reviewing the details when they are released and moving forward on a bipartisan basis to stabilize the markets and ensure access to affordable, quality health coverage for all Americans.”
