WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement in recognition of Memorial Day:

"Whether on the banks of the Mississippi or the Mekong, in Korengal Valley or Valley Forge, in the pastures of Pennsylvania or the fields of France, valiant American forces have fought and died throughout the centuries and around the world to defend the freedom, security, and human dignity of others.  Today, I join my fellow Americans in honoring their sacrifice. When we send our soldiers, sailors, Marines, and airmen into harm's way, we make a commitment not only to cherish the memory of those who fall in service to our country but also to care for those who are fortunate enough to make it home – especially those who bear the physical and psychological scars of war.  That's why I brought the Honoring Our PACT Act to the Floor in March, which will provide expanded care to more than 3.5 million veterans who were exposed to harmful toxins from sources like burn pits and Agent Orange.  I was proud to help pass it through the House.  I will continue working in Congress to ensure that our veterans and the families of our fallen receive the support they deserve.

"At a time when forces of tyranny are once again threatening those who cherish freedom throughout the world, let us take this day to recommit ourselves to the principles of liberty, truth, equality, and democracy for which our heroes paid the ultimate price.  May God bless them, their families, our veterans, and their fellow service-members who are still protecting us today."
