WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after meeting with international human and civil rights activists who received the National Endowment for Democracy award:

“I was honored to meet today with recipients of the National Endowment for Democracy award. From Afghanistan to Belarus to Ukraine, those activists who are working for civil and human rights and the rule of law rely on our country to set an example and to advocate on their behalf against often repressive regimes. As a former Chairman of the Helsinki Commission, I continue to meet with civil society leaders and democracy activists who are struggling to open up closed regimes and build responsible, democratic institutions. We must continue to stand with them as they face repression and even state-sanctioned murder in order to bring freedom to their countries.”
