WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for May:
“Today’s jobs report is welcome news that the economy continues to sustain job creation, although at a muted pace compared to the height of the recovery. President Trump continues to play dangerous games with economic policy that are not paying off for American workers. Whether launching a trade war that threatens American jobs or adding trillions to deficits in order to give tax breaks to the wealthiest, this President and the Republican-led Congress are mortgaging tomorrow’s economic strength for positive headlines today. Even then, the $4,000 pay raises and 6% economic growth this Administration promised have not come to pass, having been washed out by record corporate buybacks and an economy growing at just 2.2%.
“Meanwhile, today’s jobs report means little to the millions of American workers and their families who already have a job – or two, or three – and can still barely afford to make ends meet. That’s why Democrats are offering a better deal so that workers have a real shot at a secure place in a strong middle class.”
