WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on LGBT Pride Month, which is observed throughout the month of June:
“I am proud to join in celebrating LGBT Pride Month this June as we honor the contributions and the courage of LGBT Americans and recommit ourselves to ensuring that all Americans are treated with dignity and respect.
“While America is making progress toward LGBT equality, with recent victories such as the landmark Supreme Court decision in favor of marriage equality and the repeal of the discriminatory ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy, there are still challenges we must overcome. I have been deeply disappointed that President Trump has broken his promises to the LGBT community since taking office by removing protective guidance for transgender students, appointing officials with anti-LGBT views to senior roles, and remaining silent on the atrocities against gay men in Chechnya.
“In light of his actions, those of us in Congress must make it clear that we will not tolerate hate and discrimination, which is why I joined with Members of the LGBT Equality Caucus in co-sponsoring the Equality Act to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in housing, public accommodations, employment, education, credit, and jury service. I look forward to working with the LGBT Equality Caucus and the entire Democratic Caucus to advance the Equality Act and other policies that promote equality, tolerance, and fairness for all Americans.”
