WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on a study by George Washington University that estimates 2,975 people died in Puerto Rico following Hurricanes Maria and Irma:

“This new study further confirms that the Trump Administration’s response to Hurricanes Maria and Irma were woefully inadequate. In light of this alarming report, Congress must recommit itself to meeting its responsibility to provide proper oversight and hold the Administration accountable for missteps following the storms. We must take measures, such as those recommended by Rep. Nydia Velázquez, to ascertain the full extent of the hurricanes’ devastation to lives and property. I remain committed to working with Rep. Velázquez and Reps. José Serrano, Luis Gutiérrez, Darren Soto, and Stacey Plaskett to ensure Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands can rebuild stronger and more resilient than before.”
