WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today marking Jewish American Heritage Month:
“I join in marking the beginning of Jewish American Heritage Month, which is celebrated each May throughout our country. From the first merchants and craftspeople who arrived in Charleston, Boston, and New York in the seventeenth century to the survivors of destroyed communities in Europe after the Second World War, Jews have brought their hopes and dreams for a better life to the country that has always represented tolerance and new beginnings. Throughout our nation’s history, Jewish Americans have participated in building a stronger democracy, fought on the front lines for our defense, helped grow our economy through innovation and hard work, and contributed to society through the arts, sciences, and sports.
“I am fortunate to work alongside many outstanding Jewish Members of Congress who are continuing their community’s tradition of public service, the pursuit of social justice, the defense of religious freedom, and support for equal opportunity. These are among the core values that Jewish Americans and so many of their neighbors across this country share with the people of Israel, an extraordinary country reborn in the ancient homeland of the Jewish people. I will proudly continue to help lead a bipartisan coalition in Congress to join with the American Jewish community in standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Israelis in their quest for peace and security.
“Throughout the month of May, I look forward to honoring Jewish Americans who have worked to make our union more perfect, stand in defense of our common freedom, and strengthen the bonds that tie America and Israel together as we seek to further the cause of democracy and human rights throughout the world.”
