WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on the 72nd anniversary of Israel's Independence Day:

“Seventy-two years ago, the proclamation of the State of Israel fulfilled millennia of the Jewish people’s yearning for renewed independence in their homeland.  Americans are proud that our country was the first to recognize Israel’s independence and continues to be its steadfast supporter and ally.  Together, our nations strive for a better world, where justice, democracy, and freedom know no borders and where opportunity is in reach for all.  Together, we fight for a world free from anti-Semitism and the evils of bigotry and genocide.  I join in celebrating Yom Ha’Atzmaut and in expressing my solidarity with Israelis and fellow supporters of Israel in America and around the world as we continue praying for Israel to achieve the peace and security all nations deserve.

“I am proud to be a leader of the broad, bipartisan coalition supporting Israel in Congress and working to strengthen the U.S.-Israel relationship.  Over the years, my colleagues and I have worked on a bipartisan basis to ensure that Israel maintains its qualitative military edge, that the IDF has effective tools to defend against rocket attacks and tunnels of terror, and that those who threaten Israel’s destruction can never achieve the means to effect it.  This work will continue unabated, because we have no stronger ally in the Middle East, and Americans and Israelis stand united in defense of our values and in pursuit of building the better world that reflects the vision we share.”
