Hoyer Statement on Iranian Naval Aggression

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after reports of Iranian naval aggression in the Persian Gulf yesterday, causing a U.S. Naval ship to respond: 

“Iranian naval aggression in the Persian Gulf yesterday underscores the nature of the regime we are dealing with in Tehran.  That’s why the bipartisan sanctions legislation I wrote with Ranking Member Engel, Chairman Royce, and Leader McCarthy, and which the House passed overwhelmingly yesterday, is so important.  Iran’s theocratic regime must be held to account for its ballistic missile testing and its flouting of international norms.  It continues to hold American citizens captive and threaten Israel and the Gulf states.  We must continue to work with our allies to maintain a tough stance against Iran’s actions.  I will continue to monitor Iran’s behavior and work with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to put pressure on its leaders to change their ways.”
