WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the introduction and his co-sponsorship of the Keep Families Together Act, introduced by Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jerry Nadler (NY-10):

“Today, House Democrats, led by Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jerry Nadler, introduced H.R. 6135, a bill I am cosponsoring that will end the separation of families at our borders.  As a former chairman of the Helsinki Commission who spent years demanding and advocating for family unification, I am horrified by what is happening at our own border. An overwhelming majority of Americans from across the political spectrum oppose the Trump Administration’s policy of tearing children from their parents’ arms and locking them away in cages. It is cruel, inhumane, and inconsistent with American values. I urge Speaker Ryan – who claims to disagree with this policy – to not just speak out against it but take action and bring this legislation to the Floor without delay. Together, we can pass it on a bipartisan basis as a message of unity in support of keeping families together.”
