Hoyer Introduces Measure to Reopen Government While Negotiations Continue
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after introducing a clean Continuing Resolution that would reopen the government through Tuesday, January 23:

“For months, House Democrats have been urging Republicans to reach agreement on issues that we agree on: a budget agreement that adheres to parity, protecting DREAMers, reauthorizing the Children’s Health Insurance Program and other critical health care programs, and providing disaster relief to our fellow Americans. Despite the consensus for such an agreement, Republicans have wasted the past four months and refused to compromise. As a result, they shut down the government they control.

“By introducing this measure, I am giving Republicans a chance to end the Trump shutdown while we continue negotiations on these bipartisan priorities. Given the urgent need to address each of them, we are not going to give Republicans additional weeks to waste on their right-wing agenda and kick the can down the road one more time. We ought to pass this four-day CR with a commitment from Republicans to get our work done during that time. I urge House Republican leaders to bring this bill to the Floor, so that the people’s House can resume its work and move toward resolving these outstanding issues. That is what the American people expect and deserve from President Trump and the Republican Majority.”
