WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on House Speaker Paul Ryan's (WI-01) decision to not seek re-election:

“Paul Ryan has been a faithful public servant for Wisconsin and for our country.  Even though we stood on opposite sides of the debate on many issues, I’ve always found him to be a gracious and good-natured man who believes in public service and treating others with respect.  I wish him and Janna and their children all the best as he prepares to return home to Wisconsin next year.

“Now that Paul Ryan is no longer encumbered by having to run for re-election to the speakership, I hope he will use this opportunity – as John Boehner did before him – to rise above the internecine, factional squabbles in his party and work with Democrats to address critical national challenges in the months ahead.  Let’s work together to give the 116th Congress a real chance to break free from the gridlock of the past.”
