WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on House Republicans' fifth Continuing Resolution:

“Republicans control all three levers of the legislative process: the House Majority, the Senate Majority, and the presidency.  It is their responsibility to ensure that the government is funded and does not shut down.  The right way to do so is by enacting full-year appropriations that provide funding certainty to our military and our civilian agencies.  Limping from one short-term continuing resolution to the next, over and over again, is the wrong way and a dangerous way.  Doing so exacerbates uncertainty and weakens our ability to address pressing national challenges.

“Republicans know that they must work with Democrats to meet their responsibility of funding the government.  However, they have refused again and again to do so, preferring to hold the country hostage to partisan bills, rather than sit down with Democrats to work out a compromise.  This is now the fifth short-term funding extension Republicans are requesting.  This one has been repackaged with a defense spending bill that the House has passed three times now and that busts through the spending caps on defense while ignoring funding for civilian agencies, including those critical to national security and the well-being of our citizens.

“Republicans again ask for more time, yet they keep showing us that they are unwilling to use that time to sit down with Democrats and do the work of governing.”
