WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on House Republicans' bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act:
"Tonight, after seven years of claiming to have a workable replacement for the Affordable Care Act, House Republicans showed their hand, and it is empty. President Trump promised that the Republican plan would 'have insurance for everybody' that is 'far less expensive and far better.' Instead, the legislation unveiled tonight would kick millions of Americans off their health coverage and force millions to pay more for less. Furthermore, their legislation raids the Medicare trust fund, threatening its long-term solvency.
"Republicans have tried to hide the dangerous details of this legislation from the public, violating regular order and bringing it to markup in committee without hearings or even an estimate from the Congressional Budget Office of either its cost to the budget or effect on the insured population.
"This repeal charade must end. Republicans have had seven years to show they have a better way to cover millions of Americans, protect consumers, and bring costs down. Tonight we learned at last that they have none. Now in full control of the government, Republicans will be held accountable for whatever happens to our health care system under their watch, including the destabilizing uncertainty their efforts have already engendered."
