WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the House passed an omnibus appropriations package for Fiscal Year 2023:

"Today, Congress fulfilled one of its most basic responsibilities: to fund our government and keep it working For the People.  I was proud to bring a sweeping, bipartisan omnibus package to the Floor with full-year appropriations for 2023 and to join my Democratic and Republican colleagues in passing it through the House.  I thank Chairwoman DeLauro and Ranking Member Granger and their colleagues and staff on the House Appropriations Committee for their diligent, bipartisan efforts to forge this agreement.  Similarly, I commend them for advancing all twelve of the regular appropriations bills for fiscal year 2023 out of their committee in June – building on our Democratic Majority's record of passing legislation to fund almost all of the government by the end of summer for the past four years.

"From rising costs and inflation to the worsening effects of natural disasters and the climate crisis, this omnibus addresses many of the most pressing issues facing Americans.  Additionally, it protects against future assaults on our democracy like the violent insurrection we witnessed on January 6, 2021, by clarifying once and for all that the Vice President’s role in overseeing the count of electoral votes is purely ceremonial.  Indeed, no individual can or ought to be able to overturn the American people's will.  As we heard so eloquently this week from Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, Congress's duty to promote democracy and freedom also extends beyond our borders.  This bill reflects that commitment, providing an additional $45 billion in crucial assistance to the people of Ukraine in their courageous effort to repel Vladimir Putin's cruel and criminal invasion of their sovereign nation.  The future of the free world depends on their decisive and total victory over their invaders.  Congress must continue to fulfill its responsibility to the American people and to the democratic ideals that we and so many others around the world hold dear, and I look forward to joining House Democrats in supporting that mission in the 118th Congress."
