WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after House Republicans passed their GOP tax scam with every House Democrat voting against the bill:
“Today, 227 Republicans voted to raise taxes on 36 million middle-class households and to add at least $1.7 trillion to our national debt, all in order to provide massive tax breaks to the top one percent. This is not tax reform; it doesn’t even merit being called a tax cut. Instead, voters will surely see it for what it is: another example of Republicans prioritizing the wealthy over the middle class. Their reckless approach to economic policy will leave our children and grandchildren buried in debt and widen the gap between those whose opportunities abound and those struggling to get by.
“I urge wiser voices to prevail in the Senate, where I hope this irresponsible and partisan effort will be halted in its tracks. Perhaps then Republicans will come to the negotiating table and work with Democrats on real, permanent, and bipartisan tax reform that benefits the middle class, is revenue neutral, and promotes growth though greater certainty for businesses and families.”
