WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the House Budget Committee's Member hearing on the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office:
“For more than forty years, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has followed its mandate to provide nonpartisan, independent analysis to lawmakers based on proven principles of accounting, statistics, and scientific method. In that time, it has earned the respect of both parties as the neutral referee in debates over the budgetary impact of proposed legislation. This must remain so. I am disappointed that, over the past few years, some in Congress have sought to politicize the CBO and force it to adopt questionable methodologies in order to skew analyses away from economic consensus and toward their preferred ideology.
“While I was unable to participate in today’s Member hearing in the House Budget Committee, I hope Members on both sides will stand up for the CBO and recognize the hardworking analysts who continue to perform their work admirably under great pressure. We must maintain the CBO’s status as an independent, broadly respected provider of unbiased budget analysis.”
