WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, which begins today, September 15, and runs through October 15:

“I join in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to recognize and reflect on the contributions of Latinos and Latinas to our national life.  Throughout our history, Hispanic Americans have enhanced every aspect of this country and worked hard to make America safer, more prosperous, and more reflective of its Founders’ vision.  I’ve been proud to work closely with my colleagues from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus to build on that work in our own day: to fight for equal opportunity and equal justice for all who call America home.

“This year’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebration must be a call to action to defend the principles embodied by the flag to which we pledge our allegiance together.  At this moment, we are united in a common effort to protect many thousands of Latino and Latina DREAMers who are among those now living in fear for the future because of the ending of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. We must pass the DREAM Act to provide a permanent solution that allows DREAMers to remain here and contribute to this country, which they love and call home.”
