WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the GOP tax scam conference report:
“Republicans waited until Friday night to release the text of their tax bill conference report in a clear attempt to hide it from the American people, who deeply dislike this bill. It will increase taxes on millions of middle class families in order to give tax cuts to the wealthy, and it will explode the deficit by nearly $2 trillion - a shocking and irresponsible burden that our children and grandchildren will be forced to bear.
“Everything about this bill is a tutorial in how not to govern: rushed through with no hearings, limited markup, and no attempt to reach agreement across the aisle. Republicans will jam their bill through Congress next week before the newly elected Senator from Alabama is sworn in, denying the citizens of that state the representation they chose.
“In their haste to just pass anything, Republicans have managed to craft a bill that will harm the middle class, take health care away from millions, and cut Medicare. They should be ashamed of this bill and scrap it entirely in favor of bipartisan, revenue-neutral tax reform that benefits the middle class.”
