WASHINGTON, DC – Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the fifth anniversary of the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Repeal Act being signed into law:

“Five years ago, President Obama signed the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Repeal Act into law, beginning a process that would eventually lead to the full integration of Americans in our Armed Forces without regard for their sexual orientation.  I was proud, as Majority Leader, to bring that legislation to the Floor, where nearly all House Democrats and a handful of courageous Republicans rejected that discriminatory policy once and for all.  When an American volunteers to serve, it ought not matter who he or she loves but how much they love their country.  As we continue to open more doors of opportunity for equal service within the military, we make it stronger by ensuring that it can recruit and retain the most dedicated and talented Americans to wear our nation’s uniform.  I will continue to stand up for a fully inclusive military, not only because it is better for our national security but because it is critical that our Armed Forces reflect our values of equality and freedom.”
