WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer released the following statement today in support of the Fair Day in Court for Kids Act of 2016, of which he is a co-sponsor:
“The women and children who have arrived at our borders after fleeing violence deserve due process rights, and it is unacceptable that a majority of these families are not receiving legal representation in their deportation proceedings. That is why I am cosponsoring the Fair Day in Court for Kids Act of 2016, which would help ensure that these individuals receive counsel and legal information about their rights and responsibilities under immigration law.
“America is a nation of equality, justice, and due process, and we have a moral responsibility to treat the refugee children arriving at our borders as we would want our own children treated. I thank Reps. Zoe Lofgren, Luis Gutierrez, and Lucille Roybal-Allard for their tireless advocacy and leadership on this issue, and I urge swift passage of this legislation.”
