WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the House overwhelmingly rejected Republicans’ second anti-immigrant bill:

“Once again, Republican leaders put a partisan immigration bill on the Floor, and it failed overwhelmingly.  When will they realize that the path forward on immigration and asylum reform must be a bipartisan one?  When will they focus on policies that recognize the human aspect of our immigration challenges?  Americans are heartbroken to see images of small children caged and alone, crying out for their parents.  An overwhelming majority of our people want to see DREAMers given a chance to stay in the country they love and contribute to and have called home nearly their whole lives – and do not support deporting these young people to distant lands they have never known.

“Democrats envision immigration policies that are smart, responsible, and humane.  That’s why we continue to be ready to work across the aisle to keep asylum-seeking families together and to solve the DACA crisis in a way that is fair and provides a pathway to citizenship for DREAMers.  Both of these challenges were created by President Trump, and his actions are now making it harder for Congress to address them responsibly.  I urge the President to cease his unhelpful tweets, and I call on House Republicans to work with Democrats toward a workable, bipartisan solution to these challenges.”
