WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on Equal Pay Day:
"Today marks Equal Pay Day, when we raise awareness of the persistent pay gap between men and women that deprives millions of American women - and the households they support - of earned and deserved income. We observe it today because women need to keep working until March 15 to earn, on average, the same pay for the same work that men brought home the previous year. As Americans we cannot accept this disparity, and our Democratic House Majority is determined to close the gender pay gap. That’s why we passed the Paycheck Fairness Act both in this Congress and the previous one. As that legislation awaits Senate action, blocked by Republicans’ filibuster, House Democrats will continue taking whatever steps we can to help women earn the equal pay for equal work that they deserve.
“At the same time, we will keep working to enact policies that help more women return to the workforce after the pandemic and reach for opportunities to get ahead in their careers. Moreover, we are committed to closing the even-more-extreme disparities in pay for minority, Native, and disabled women, who earn significantly less, on average, for the same work as their male colleagues. This is an effort that will require a concerted, national commitment, and Democrats will not rest until we achieve greater equity of opportunity for women in our country.”
