Hoyer Statement on Election as Democratic Whip

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today upon election as Democratic Whip:  

“I am humbled and honored by the opportunity to serve as Democratic Whip for the 114th Congress, and I greatly appreciate the support of my Democratic colleagues.  As the new Congress convenes, our Caucus will stand united in support of measures to grow the middle class by investing in job creation and ensuring equal opportunity for all Americans.  Our strength can be found both in the diversity of backgrounds and experience among our Members and in our common commitment as Democrats to preserving and enhancing the enduring promise of the American Dream.

“The American people elected a new Congress that must work together in order to achieve results and find bipartisan solutions to the major challenges we face as a nation.  Democrats will continue to reach across the aisle to make progress where agreement can be found, while standing by our core principles of fighting for equality, opportunity, and a fair shot for every individual, family, and business to make it in America.   I look forward to continuing to work with Leader Pelosi, Assistant Leader Clyburn, Chairman Becerra, Vice Chairman Crowley, and our hard-working Democratic Members to move the 114th Congress toward meaningful action that has a positive impact on the people we serve.” 

Hoyer was nominated to be the Democratic Whip by Congressman Elijah Cummings (MD) and seconded by Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL), Congressman Juan Vargas (CA), and Congressman Joe Kennedy (MA).
