WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after President Trump ended his “election integrity” commission yesterday:

“This commission to suppress the vote should never have been created in the first place. It found no fraud because there had been no fraud, and it should not be revived by the Department of Homeland Security. It was a waste of taxpayer resources and had no other purpose than to make it harder for millions of eligible voters to cast ballots in our elections. It represented a culmination of years of Republican efforts to roll back basic voting rights.

“If Republicans want to get serious about improving our voting systems, I urge them to work with Democrats to fund the Election Assistance Commission (EAC) and ensure that it has a quorum to conduct its important work. They also ought to allow the House and Senate to vote on bipartisan legislation restoring the full force of the Voting Rights Act, which the Supreme Court undermined in 2013.”
