WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Raj Shah announced that he is stepping down as Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development after five years of service:
“I join in thanking Raj Shah for his service these past five years as Administrator for the U.S. Agency for International Development. Under his leadership, USAID staff and volunteers have been making a huge difference around the world, bringing food, water, education, and hope to millions of people in need. When natural or humanitarian disasters strike, USAID personnel are there to deliver assistance on behalf of the American people, fulfilling not only our commitments to helping those less fortunate but also building bridges that enhance our national security and public diplomacy.
“During Raj’s tenure, USAID has expanded its presence and nimbly responded to emergencies such as the civil conflict in South Sudan and the outbreak of ebola in West Africa. As he prepares to step down early next year, I encourage the President to seek in his successor a candidate who will follow Raj’s strong example, and I wish Raj all the best as he prepares to launch the next chapter in his career.”
