WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the murder of two United Nations workers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo:
“I was deeply saddened to learn of the deaths of American U.N. worker Michael Sharp and his Swedish colleague Zaida Catalan in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The work that Michael and his team of sanctions inspectors have been carrying out is crucial to rooting out heinous human rights abuses in that country and investigating mass murders that have been uncovered there. Michael embodied the very best of America – a dedication to service in the cause of justice and a steadfastness in seeking to make our world a better place for all. I will continue to monitor developments closely and urge DRC officials to cooperate fully with investigations into what happened to Michael and Zaida.”
