WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today, after the remaining hospitals in rebel-held Aleppo, Syria were forced to stop providing care due to extreme bombardment:

“The ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Aleppo and other Syrian cities must not be met with silence or acquiescence.  Russian and Syrian government forces are committing war crimes and terrorizing civilian populations, not – as President Putin claims – to defeat ISIS but to strengthen the totalitarian control of the Assad regime, Russia’s ally.  No responsible global leader could reasonably endorse such activity, particularly those who will set the course of American foreign policy in the months ahead.  I will continue to support measures like the Caesar Syrian Civilian Protection Act, which passed the House last week and ought to be enacted swiftly into law, and hold the next Administration accountable for its actions with regard to Syria.”
