WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Senate Banking Committee rejected former Rep. Scott Garrett's nomination to lead the Export-Import Bank:
“Today, by rejecting the nomination of Scott Garrett, the Senate Banking Committee made it clear that Congress will not allow the Export-Import Bank to be sabotaged from within. The Bank continues to be a critical tool for American manufacturing competitiveness by helping ensure that U.S. exporters compete on a level playing field in foreign markets.
“Mr. Garrett’s nomination followed a pattern by the Trump Administration of selecting individuals to run agencies who had long campaigned against their existence or core mission. Now that the Garrett nomination has been rejected by the Banking Committee, I urge the President to nominate someone to lead the Bank who understands its importance to our economy. I also hope the Senate will move forward expeditiously to confirm the remaining Board members in order to provide a quorum so the Bank can become fully operational and help the full range of American exporters compete across the globe.”
