WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA), who has been recommended to be Ranking Democrat on the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, and Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY), Ranking Member on the Appropriations Committee, introduced H.R. 861, a clean funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security:

“I was proud to cosponsor a bill today to fund the Department of Homeland Security for the remainder of the fiscal year at the level agreed to by Democrats and Republicans.  It is reckless and irresponsible for Republicans to continue to hold our national security hostage to partisan, anti-immigrant measures that would deport children and split immigrant families apart. At a time when our country faces dangerous threats, we must ensure the agency responsible for responding to those threats is not shut down over an unrelated, political debate.

“With only six legislative days remaining before thousands of homeland security personnel are furloughed, Congress must act quickly to pass a funding bill free from partisan riders. Republicans should join with Democrats and pass this bill without delay. I want to thank Rep. Roybal-Allard and Ranking Member Lowey for their leadership on this critical issue.”
