WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on Cinco de Mayo:
"I join in celebrating Cinco de Mayo, which marks the defeat by Mexican forces of an invading French army at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. That victory inspired Americans who shared Mexicans' love of freedom and self-determination. As we mark this anniversary, let us take it as an opportunity to reaffirm the close and historic bonds between the United States and Mexico as well as to pay tribute to the immeasurable contributions of Mexican Americans to our country.
"I'm proud to work closely with my colleagues in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus to stand up for justice, equality, and opportunity, and together we mounted a strong and successful defense against the worst and most discriminatory policies of the Trump Administration over the past four years. Now, under the Biden-Harris Administration, our government is working to reverse policies that separated families, forced many to live in fear, and promoted an environment of discrimination against people of Mexican descent. One of the first legislative actions of the Democratic-led House in the 117th Congress was to pass the American Dream and Promise Act - to allow Dreamers to stay in this country, the only home they know - and the Farm Workforce Modernization Act. Together, these bills would lead to permanent legal status for as many as 4 million immigrants who have lived here for years and who contribute positively to our communities.
"I look forward to continuing to partner with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and with the Biden-Harris Administration to celebrate the cultural and economic contributions made to our nation by Mexican Americans and continue to support America's historic role as a multicultural nation welcoming of newcomers. The events in Pueblo 159 years ago continue to inspire Americans and Mexicans alike, and I hope that we will all continue to heed its lesson: that the principles and aspirations that unite us are far stronger than any divisions."
