WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on Cinco de Mayo, which is observed tomorrow:

“I join with Mexican-Americans in celebrating Cinco de Mayo.  On this date 156 years ago, Mexican patriots and freedom fighters won a crucial victory to prevent a return of colonialism and preserve their nation’s independence.  In doing so, they helped preserve American independence as well.  Each year, we pay tribute to the cause of liberty and to the ties that bind our nations – both historical and personal.

“More than 30 million Americans are of Mexican heritage, and many continue to have strong family and business ties that transcend borders.  I’m proud to work closely in Congress with Mexican-American colleagues in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus as we fight to break down barriers, expand opportunity, and defend the freedoms that all our people ought to enjoy.  Together, we will continue to push for legislation enabling DREAMers to remain here on a pathway to citizenship and strive toward reforms that keep families together.

“The anti-immigrant rhetoric and policies of this Administration obscure the incontestable truth that our nations share a common destiny.  It denies the history of the contributions by Mexican-Americans to building this country and making it stronger, safer, and more prosperous. Mexican-Americans form an inseparable part of the American family, and Congress has a responsibility to protect them from discrimination and exclusion.  This is a responsibility Democrats will continue fighting every day to meet.”
