WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on Cinco de Mayo:

“Today, I join in celebrating Cinco de Mayo, the anniversary of the Mexican army’s victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla. The defeat of the well-equipped French forces, which posed a threat to Mexican independence and American interests, is a source of great pride for Mexicans and Mexican-Americans and is a reminder of the strong ties between our two nations.

“As we mark Cinco de Mayo, we also recognize the extraordinary achievements and rich heritage of the Mexican-American community. Mexican-Americans have contributed to our economy, served in our Armed Forces, and enhanced every aspect of national life. As a nation of immigrants, we must continue to welcome those in search of the American dream and who are willing to work hard and play by the rules to achieve it.

“In Congress, I’m proud to serve alongside many distinguished Mexican-American colleagues. I thank them for their leadership, and I look forward to continuing to work closely with them and other Members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. Together, we will work to grow our economy, fix our broken immigration system, and increase opportunity so that all Americans can secure a place in the middle class.”
