Hoyer Statement on Cinco de Mayo

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today commemorating Cinco de Mayo:

“Today, I join in celebrating Cinco de Mayo, the anniversary of one of the most inspiring moments in Mexican history – victory in the Battle of Puebla. For 153 years, this date has evoked enormous pride in the hearts of millions of Mexicans and Mexican-Americans as they honor the heroes who repulsed foreign invaders and assured Mexico’s liberty. This holiday also reminds us of our close and important ties with Mexico, both between our governments and our people – as well as our common commitment to the values of freedom and opportunity.

“Mexican-Americans have contributed significantly toward building our country and meeting the challenges facing not only the Latino community but all Americans.  I look forward to continuing to work closely with my Mexican-American colleagues and other Members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus to fix our broken immigration system, make quality and affordable health care more accessible, spur the creation of well-paying jobs, and expand opportunities that help more people reap the benefits of our economic recovery and attain the American Dream.”
