WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on what would have been the eighty-ninth birthday of César Chávez:
“I join in celebrating what would have been the eighty-ninth birthday of César Chávez, an extraordinary American who stood up for the rights of workers and Latinos in California and across our country. His leadership, as founder of the United Farm Workers, and his unyielding advocacy for justice, equality, and access to opportunity for all have earned César Chávez a place in the pantheon of our nation’s greatest civil rights heroes. I continue to be inspired by his legacy, as are so many Americans, and I hope this César Chávez Day will serve as an opportunity to reflect on how all of us can build on his efforts by working toward a more just, more inclusive, and more perfect union. I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and throughout the House Democratic Caucus to achieve these goals and further the efforts that César Chávez began.”
