WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of César Chávez Day:

“As we mark the 88th birthday of the late César Chávez, I join in celebrating his achievements and his extraordinary life.  As a co-founder of the United Farm Workers, Chávez fought for equality, justice, and opportunity for Latino farm workers and became an inspirational figure for all who stand up for the equal rights of every worker.   He dedicated his life to advocating for fair treatment and better conditions for some of the most vulnerable workers in our country – as well as for the recognition of Latinos’ contributions to America’s economy and way of life.

“Cesar Chávez’s legacy continues to inspire us to help more of our people achieve the American Dream by making sure they have access to the opportunities that have always made that dream possible.  He will surely continue to stand as one of our nation’s greatest civil rights leaders and as a role model for all of us as we seek to build on his legacy by working together to make those opportunities available to all those who strive to achieve a better life for themselves and their families.”
