WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement tonight in response to the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida:

“I was again shocked and saddened to see an American school subjected to the horrors of gun violence today.  How long before our nation comes together to address this crisis responsibly?  For how much longer must students, teachers, movie-goers, travelers, workers, public servants, concert-attendees, worshippers, and Americans of every kind have to live in fear of suddenly being in the wrong place at the wrong time?  There should never be a wrong place, especially when that place is a school.  And there is never a wrong time for us to do what is right and tackle this challenge head-on.

“The Broward County law enforcement officers and first responders securing the scene and treating victims deserve great praise for their courage and professionalism, and I join in thanking them for their service.  I will be praying for the victims and their families to have the strength to face the difficult days and weeks ahead.”
