WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the first day of the open enrollment period. Starting today, Americans can sign up for health insurance for 2018 from November 1 through December 15 on healthcare.gov

“Beginning today, Americans can log on to www.healthcare.gov to shop for health insurance plans for 2018.  Since the Affordable Care Act was signed in 2010, the law has helped tens of millions of Americans access affordable coverage. In their zeal to turn the clock back, President Trump and his allies in Congress have been trying relentlessly to take the benefits of the Affordable Care Act away.  Having failed to do so through their dangerous TrumpCare legislation, they are now attempting to sabotage the open enrollment process by shortening the enrollment period, shutting down the website during this period, and refusing to spread the word about when open enrollment is happening.

“No matter how much President Trump and Republicans try to undermine the Affordable Care Act, the law remains in effect, and those who want to sign up for a plan through the marketplace can do so until December 15 in order to be covered starting in January 2018.  Even those who already have coverage ought to log on and see if there are new options for 2018 that might be more affordable or better provide the coverage they need for themselves or their dependents.  This year, eight in ten Americans who log on will be able to find a plan for less than $75 a month.

“House Democrats will continue working to protect Americans’ access to coverage under the Affordable Care Act, and we will keep promoting policies that bring greater stability and certainty to our health insurance markets over the long term.  That’s why I am urging the Senate to move forward with consideration of the bipartisan Alexander-Murray legislation to restore cost-saving reduction payments and take other measures that increase stability.

“I encourage every American to log on to www.healthcare.gov starting today to see what coverage options are available before the open-enrollment period ends on December 15.”
