WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for August:

“This morning’s jobs report once again shows an economy adding private sector jobs, with 140,000 created in August, representing the sixty-sixth consecutive month of private sector job gains - and the unemployment rate falling to 5.1%.  With the Great Recession firmly behind us, and the Federal Reserve contemplating changes to our monetary policy, Congress has a responsibility to take the reins and set America on a sound economic course for the future.

“Instead of disinvestment in the form of sequestration and manufactured crises that sow uncertainty that deters private investment, Congress ought to work in a bipartisan way to make America the most attractive place for businesses to create jobs that pay workers well.  That’s why House Democrats are undertaking a process of updating and adapting the Make It In America jobs plan to take advantage of new economic opportunities and address the challenges of 2015 and beyond. In addition, I hope that Democrats and Republicans can work together this autumn to avoid another government shutdown, ensure our nation pays its bill, pass a long-term highway bill, and invest in domestic priorities that help businesses grow jobs that make it possible for America’s workers to secure a place in an expanding middle class.”
